LASIK Candidacy New Hampshire

Not everyone is a candidate for LASIK. Laser vision correction corrects nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism in patients who have otherwise healthy eyes. A complete eye exam is important pre-operatively to evaluate for problems such as cataracts, macular degeneration, or ocular herpetic infections. Severe dry eyes may make a patient a poor candidate. Patients with irregularly shaped corneas, such as keratoconus, should not have laser vision correction.

A careful medical history is also important to determine if a patient is a good laser vision correction candidate. Diabetes may make a patient a poor candidate. Also, collagen vascular, autoimmune or immunodeficiency disease such as lupus or rheumatoid arthritis may preclude surgery. Certain oral medications are not recommended in combination with laser vision correction, such as accutane or amiodarone. Patients who are pregnant or nursing are not good candidates for laser surgery.
