Nashua Eye accepting EyeMed Vision plans
Due to the recent increase in local employers offering EyeMed vision insurance, Nashua Eye has contracted with EyeMed as an accepted vision plan. EyeMed, VSP, and Superior Vision are now the three most common vision benefit plans in our community. Vision plans are supplementary vision insurance in addition to your medical insurance. Check with your employer to find out if a vision plan is available as part of your benefits.
EyeMed, VSP, and Superior Vision offer discounts towards frames, lenses, contacts, and other eyewear such as sunglasses. Typically a yearly eye exam is included with vision insurance. Conversley, most medical insurance policies provide for a routine eye exam every two years. If you are unsure if your medical or vision plan contracts with Nashua Eye, visit our website or call our billing office at 882-7143. As always, new or existing eye symptoms or diseases are covered at any time as part of medical insurance, regardless of your routine eye exam status.
Remarkable Advances in Macular Degeneration Treatment
Macular degeneration or "ARMD" (Age Related Macular Degeneration) is one of the leading causes of profound vision loss in older patients in the developed world. Most patients with ARMD have the dry type where aging changes to the retina result in mild to moderate vision problems. A minority of patients have the wet type where bleeding or fluid in the retina causes severe central vision loss. Patients with ARMD benefit from regular visits with their Nashua Eye comprehensive eye doctor. Patients with advanced disease may benefit from seeing on of our retina specialist, Jeffrey Marx, M.D. and Fina Barouch, M.D. Drs. Marx and Barouch visit Nashua Eye regularly from their prestigious academic positions at Lahey Clinic in Massachusetts.
Advancements in the treatment of ARMD over the last five and ten years have been amazing. Medications known as "anti-VEGF's" have revolutionized care of wet ARMD. Whereas ten years ago the goal of treatment was to slow progression of the disease, now many patients experience an improvement in their vision.
As family history of ARMD, cigarette smoking, light complexion, and long term sun exposure are some of the risk factors of ARMD. Ask your Nashua Eye doctor about your risk factors for ARMD and if an ARMD vitamin might reduce your risk.
